How One Simple Test Optimized My Site & Added $606.71 This Month

Admittedly, I’ve been neglecting some other projects in order to focus on creating premium content here on this blog.

As you may recall I recently took a trip Affiliate Summit West at the first of the year. Afterwards I was highly motivated and decided to have a look at some of my other projects that had been sitting idle.

One particular project had terrible code, and massively outdated search optimization. It was a prime candidate for a fast fix and long term payoff. The result was an almost immediate increase in sales.

First as a general rule, I recommend cleaning up your html code.

I say this because we’re trying to reach the goal of a highly optimized website. For the sake of this post I won’t get into a lot of detail why that’s important in terms of optimizing for search. In any case, I’m going to show you a few tools that make it so easy that you’ll have no excuse not to do this step.

This is most important for static pages. If you have WordPress or another content management system you can probably skip this step.

Now, you’ll want to save a copy of your page first. Always save copies when making any code changes!

Then grab a copy of the code or the url.

For the Mac junkies like me, check out TextMate. For the most part any of or your favorite professional html editors will have this feature. Look for something like “Tidy” or “Validate”

In TextMate it looks like this… (bundlesHTMLTidy)

Paste your code into TextMate, or open the saved copy with it, then run that process. Presto chango, you’ve got cleaned up code!

If you don’t have a utility like that, or gasp, use a PC…then you can try this online tidy utility.

Verify that everything still works and looks correct on the new code , and then upload before proceeding. (that’s why you save a copy just in case something goes weird)

The SEO Checkup

Now that you’re starting on a relatively clean slate, here’s where the magic happens.

I’ve found some incredible tools that even the newest of beginners can use to get superb on-page SEO optimization.

There’s two that I want to focus on, and I recommend using each of them as they both have their own unique benefits.

First head on over to seo site checkup. Type your URL and click “Get Checkup”

What follows is an analysis with a long list of on page recommendations.

This first resource covers a lot of detail but it doesn’t do much for explanation. If you know what these mean, then go through and check it out. It’s probably the better analysis but not as helpful for beginners. Start here but don’t do anything yet.

Open up another new tab and go here and check your site again.

While this analysis is much shorter, it does a much better job of educating about the results you get. (they even link to a Google patent about semantic units)

There’s a lot to digest, so I’m going to make it easier for you.

The absolutely most important area to focus on is your common keywords and meta information.

Make sure they are accurately reflecting your best keyword for that particular page as well as related keywords.

POWER TIP:

While you can spend weeks optimizing every last detail, here’s a shortcut (and what I did to improve my own results)

Open another new tab, or window in your browser.
Search for your target keyword.
Copy the top ranked site URL.
Run the tool for that site

What you have now is a minimum target for the highest ranked competition to compare against your results.

As an example, on my site I didn’t bother with compression and many of the site speed and technical optimizations (for now).

I simply modified my keywords a bit and corrected some missing related keywords that I noticed other sites had included.

Not surprisingly I started seeing traffic and sales from new keyword combinations almost immediately after the new changes were re-indexed.

If it sounds simple… it is!

But that’s the benefit of having a pro like me to show you the ropes

Now get out there and fix your site until it’s a money grabbing, top ranking machine.

Because no two people think the same and no two people interpret the same situation alike and you can blog about anything.

A stay-at home mom can blog about how to make her kids listen to her or about cooking secrets. If she is informative enough, thousands of people will sign on to her site to read what she has to say and get household ideas. Some of her most popular readers will likely be stay-at-home moms like herself. That stay-at-home mom is making her presence known.

Or you can have an extremely popular person blog about the secrets of successful dating or just share experiences he or she had and another person halfway across the country or world can live bi-curiously through that person. The popular person is making their presence known by creating that blog. Many famous people already have blogs of their own. Rosie O’Donnell has a very popular blogging area on her website and many people view it daily.

In addition, you can be an average person, with nothing too unique about yourself and still write a successful blog. As long as you have the writing skills to really make any particular situation interesting to read about, you will have it made. If you can find a way to talk about your dating life in a manner that makes people want to read more each day, you will create your niche. Your niche might not be dating, but might instead be cars. Whatever your area of interest is, you can create a unique blog with it.

The list and possibilities go on and on for days. Creating a blog is almost like bring your world to the rest of the world, your thoughts or your ideas. For someone who wants to have an opinion about something political one can blog about it or if someone wants to display frustration about a personal problem or who needs advice, again, one cam blog about it. By creating a blog you are giving a piece of yourself to complete strangers, a piece of yourself that most people rather keep for themselves a piece that people consider private. So by creating a blog you are letting the world know you are hear and you have something to say and you are going to say it.

By making your presence known with a blog no one can take away how you feel about something because it is coming from you in your own words. In this enormous world of people it is easy to get lost like a needle in the haystack but a blog helps you to stand out and you can be found on the World Wide Web by simply typing in your name or your domain.

Your blog is your piece of the pie and you have absolute freedom to say and post whatever your little heart desires and it will be there forever. The more you have to say and the more impact your words or stories the more and more people will know who you are, again thus making your presence known. As humans we strive to be the big fish in a sea a sea of sharks, especially with everything that is going on around us. We want to distinguish just how different we are and creating a blog is a great way to do so. So what are you waiting for, your presence is needed.

So, consider trying out a blog. Even if you don’t gain fame or money from doing it, you can use it is a way to release stress. Many people find blogging very therapeutic. In fact, the idea of putting yourself out there can also help you avoid certain phobias you may have. So, if you need a creative release and want something that is free, consider a blog!

Churning out eZine Content

Creating your own content can be a challenge if you publish your own online newsletter or eZine.

However, regardless of any topic you are publishing on, types of contents can be generally divided into four categories, namely factual content, short tips, mini stories and case studies.

Other than writing your own content, you can get your own unique content the quick and easy way by organizing an interview with an expert or leader in the topic.

Very often, this can be done for free and since the interviewee is writing out most of the content, there is nothing else for you to do other than giving the interviewee something valuable in exchange (maybe a meal!).

Hold a Brainstorming Session

To start out, have a brainstorming session with yourself. Have a brainstorming
session with your significant other. Have a brainstorming session with another
marketer. Do whatever you can to get those creative juices to start flowing.

When doing your brainstorming, you want to focus on your goal. Remember that

Traffic Multiplier: Five Times More Visitors with Less Work

However, if you don’t want your work to go to waste, you absolutely NEED to be publishing it in several different formats.

Here’s why…

When you cross into different platforms you instantly increase the amount of potential traffic on a very large scale.

Not everyone is consuming your content the same way.

So why limit yourself to just a blog post, or just an article?

Second, the exact same content presented in a different format is still just as effective.

In other words, to take advantage of these other sources, you merely have to change the medium, not the media!

That means you can take the content you’re already making, and simply put it into a different format.

Instant NEW audience!

You can do this yourself or outsource the work with relative ease. There’s no need to make entirely new material for each platform.

The best part is that It works incredibly well…

Not only that, you can completely dominate search results this way.

Here’s an example where I employed this strategy in the past for a product launch and occupied countless listings (red arrows) across the first and second page. This of course led to some nice affiliate commissions!

Now you know that it works…

Here’s 5 different examples to get more traffic with your existing content.

Video

By now, everyone knows about YouTube, but here’s the trick.

You don’t have to step in front of the camera, or shoot some epic movie to benefit from their traffic.

If you’ve got a content piece, then simply break it down into an outline.
Next, collect any related images.
Then pick the most informative points, and create a short three minute slideshow.

If you’re too shy to speak, or don’t have audio recording equipment than outsource it.

If you can’t afford that, than simply put some images to music with a service like animoto.com

The upside is that there’s a lot more video sharing sites out there than YouTube!

With a tool like RankBuilder you can even submit the same video to several sites with one click.

As you get the hang of this method you can quickly multiply your efforts with very little extra work.

Document

This is another relatively unknown trick that I’ve also used with great results.

There are actually websites designed specifically for document sharing such as DocStoc.

If you have an article or blog post created, make sure to put it into pdf format.

Don’t forget to include a hyperlink to your site inside the document.

Setup your tags and description to reflect the content, and you’re well on your way to getting even more visitors.

These files will even get listed in the search engines giving you even more traffic than just the site visitors.

NOTE: Please don’t use your new powers for evil. Make sure you’re submitting your good content, and not just thinly disguised adverts.

Slide

Here’s another easy method. Once you’ve made your slideshow for video, you can also share just the slides themselves!

There’s a site called SlideShare where you can do just that.

These are perfect for attracting an information hungry audience.

Of course, the better your slide the more popular it will be, but it’s not much more trouble or cost to take an already great post, and have it turned into slides.

In addition, the site also includes social media sharing so you can benefit from even more traffic with a popular slideshow that gets shared.

Articles

Article directories across the web accept and display content in any niche you can imagine. There are also various degrees of quality when it comes to these article directories.

While an epic blog post might be full of high quality images and resources, an article can be a more stripped down summarized version of the material.

This naturally lends itself to creating multiple variations of the same basic piece.

What you can do is modify the introduction, summary, replace synonyms, and change the headline to ultimately create as many as ten “new” content pieces.

Also, for outsourcing purposes, a re-write is cheaper than an original content piece.

The main trick here is to make them just different enough that they pass any search duplication filters, but remain quality and interesting to potential readers.

Provide just enough information that they learn something, but want to visit your website for more.

Again, RankBuilder is a great tool for distributing your articles and it’s many variations.

The end result is that you’ve got a massive amount of new links, and several compelling content teasers sending traffic to your main and best content piece.

Opt-in Report

This last method we’ll discuss is quite simple.

If you’ve got a product, or ebook for sale, or even a backlog of old posts, you can compile portions of them into a short report.

Create a fresh new graphic e-cover image and you’ve got instant opt-in generating material.

Create a squeeze page with a few bullet points, or add it to your sidebar with an opt-in form.

To take it up a notch, you can also distribute it by including the rights to the content, and including a pre-made squeeze and download page.

TIP: Make sure to include links internally back to your website as well as affiliate links.

As a bonus, when you include rights it becomes long term viral traffic generator.

Best of all, no matter what method you choose, each new signup is traffic you can always reach with one simple send of an email.

That’s just a small sampling of ideas, but hopefully you are starting to realize how much more traffic you can pull from the work you’re already doing, and with much less work than trying to tackle all the different traffic sources independently.

Are you ready to learn how to uncover massive laser targeted traffic, that can create profits faster than a beam of light?

Have you ever found yourself daydreaming of what it would be like to have visitors swarming your site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year?

Although it may seem like a monumental task to get visitors to your site, internet traffic is swarming constantly all around us. People are buzzing through pages online by the hundreds of millions, and it’s actually easy to get in their way. A few readers might have already figured this out.

Unfortunately, some of those same people quickly realized that traffic doesn’t always equal profit!

If that’s you, consider it your lucky day because I’m going to whip you into shape until your traffic skills are as finely tuned as a red hot laser.

What is targeted traffic?

Sadly, most people skip right over the “marketing” part when looking to get into “internet marketing.” However, one of the very first steps in creating a marketing strategy is to define your target market.

Targeted traffic is visitors from your target market.

So what’s a target market?

A target market consists of a pre-defined and highly specific subsection of people based on various criteria. If that sounds a bit too complicted let me break it down further.

Put simply, it’s the people most likely to buy your stuff.

So hopefully you can already see the massive error in skipping this step of the marketing process.

In fact from my experience helping others, the first thing people do is start at the complete opposite and wrong end. They pick a crummy product, build a site, write the copy, and then try to push it onto anyone and everyone without so much as a thought to who might really want it. You should start to see why that’s a bad idea.

How do you define a target market?

Targeting is done by using one or more of the following.

geographic – (location)
demographic/socio-economic – (gender, age, income, occupation, education, household size, stage in family life cycle)
psychographic – (similar attitudes, values, and lifestyles)
behavioral – (occasions, degree of loyalty)
product-related – (relationship to a product)

We want to find similarities among people based on the list above in order to get the group most likely to buy our products or affiliate offers.

For example, you might choose to geographically target your golf campaigns during the winter to only show in southern U.S. locations because they aren’t buried in snow and have golf year round.

Great, but maybe you’re still thinking “I have no idea what those targeting words are, let alone which ones my product and website fits into”

How to cheat at targeting.

Fortunately, we can spy on other sites as well as our own to get both geographic and demographic information. I’ll also show you a sneaky tip to get an idea of psychographic information(similar behaviors, lifestyle).

What you want to do is make a short list of competitor websites.

Go to your favorite search engine and look for high traffic keywords related to your market. Pick at least 5 to 10 sites listed since some might not have enough traffic or data.

Be sure to choose some from the paid listings as well. They look like this in Google…

They also run down the right side of the page.

Remember: You have to make money to pay for ads in the long run so there’s a good chance they are making sales if you keep seeing the same company advertising for a keyword.

Save that list, and then punch quantcast.com into your address bar. Then close your mouth after you realize how this is both entirely too easy and awesome.

You may have to try several sites, but don’t be discouraged. The bigger the site you choose the more accurate and easier it will be to find data. Soon you’ll start to get a picture of who is in your market.

How to read the data

You should see something like this.

The demographic information is based on an index. 100 is the average website traffic across the entire internet. Anything over 100 means that an above average concentration of that group goes to that site. Anything below, means that fewer people from that group on average come to your site.

Also be sure to click the “see more” tab, and they do a great job of breaking it all down further and summarizing.

Like this…

Then notice below demographics on the previous page, some sites will have data on “audience also likes.” If you can get this information, it is a pure goldmine because you will start to learn alternate sources to find your target market. You should at the least register and find it for your own site.

Next, there’s a second resource where you can do the same thing, and more.

If you had any trouble finding data, then go to Alexa.com

They also offer information about the audience, with some added information like search queries, and one of the coolest features called clickstream.

With clickstream you can see the websites visitors were on right before they came to that site, and then the ones they went to afterwards. These are places you definitely want to be advertising and promoting.

How to put it all together

By now you should be furiously writing down new related websites, visitor information, queries, and keywords.

With each new related site you can dig further by using that site and repeating the process.

The secret to cashing in with this information is to explore this data for all the traffic generation methods you were previously doing and any future efforts.

Analyze them and compare with your new found data and see if you’re in fact going to reach the correct group of people.

DON’T waste time, money, or effort trying to promote to people that are too far outside your target group.

In addition, it should now be much easier to evaluate paid advertising sources. In fact, Facebook ads, and Google ads offer many targeting options to refine your ads. Now that you know what they are and how to find the correct data your paid ad results will be greatly improved.

Also, your banner advertising will be much more effective. You can choose potential sites that offer advertising based on real information, instead of guessing and hoping they have the right audience.

Finally, make sure you are using Google Analytics or some similiar tool to see not just who is coming to your site already, but what keywords are making the sales. This will also help you choose the best advertising and promotional sources based on what is already working for you. You might also find this post helpful in learning about analytics and evaluating your traffic.

So there you have it. Now you know how to really dive into your audience and see EXACTLY who you are speaking to and trying to reach. You should be able to get a very strong idea of what is the correct traffic to get, and what it clearly outside your market.

With plenty of traffic you can easily make money a number of ways. For example, you could get paid with Adsense, sell advertising, build a list, promote affiliate products and more.

I thought you’d never ask!

Just for you, I’ve compiled a rather comprehensive list of 43 different methods for generating website traffic online. I’ll give a brief explanation for each one. Pick your favorites, then master just a few from this list and you’re well on your way to making money online.

Affiliate Marketing
Affiliates are your sales reps, and in exchange for traffic and sales you provide a percentage based commission. There are many affiliate networks where you can register your product such as Clickbank, or Commission Junction. You can also run an affiliate system from your own website, but you may not get as many affiliates to promote your product as you would with other third party networks.
Article Marketing
Nearly every website online needs content. Article marketing is all about writing short topical articles with a link back to your site and distributing them to article directories that will include your content in their high traffic network. As visitors reach your author bio and click your link, you get free traffic.
Back links
Back links are simply links back to your site. Anywhere your site link is allowed to be placed can result in an increase in traffic, as well as gains in search engine ranking.
Integrated Advertising
This is a clever strategy, that involves working with other site owners and advertising in their private members area, or through their sales funnel. This could be after a squeeze page, or after a purchase. This method often generates extremely targeted website traffic.
Banner Ads
Banners usually come in wide rectangle shapes, or squares. You can find them on a wide variety of sites, and in many different markets. Website owners will usually offer paid spaces on their website to place your banner. If your offer converts well this can be a great and consistent traffic generator.
Blog Commenting
Blog commenting is simply leaving your reply to an article or blog post in your target market. By including your link in the supplied comment field, you will have a clickable way for visitors of higher traffic blogs to reach your site.
Classified Ads
There are many classified listing sites around the internet. Many are free, and you can add a listing that will be seen by many of the sites visitors. In return, you’ll get targeted traffic from people searching classifieds for exactly what you are offering.
Content Syndication
Bloggers and website owners around the web need your content. Supply them with a steady diet of articles and they will reward you with lots of traffic from their site in the form of visitors clicking your author bio link.
Contests
People LOVE the chance to win FREE stuff. Run a contest on your site, or through social media to get massive traffic.
Coupons
In our recent distressed economy, coupons have blown up in popularity. There are countless websites tracking and listing every coupon they can find. Visitors are actively searching for coupons all the time, and adding your own coupon option can generate extra free traffic.
CPA networks
If you’ve got a solid offer that converts you should know how much each visitor is worth. CPA (cost per action) networks allow you to list your offer on a pay per action basis. You pay out for every specified action an affiliate generates. In return, you get a large network of people sending you traffic in exchange.
Direct mail
This might be old school, but if you nail down your demographics well and have a great mail piece you can send out direct mail through the post office that attracts prospects to your website.
Directory listings
Many websites specialize in listing other websites within a particular market. These are known as directories. You submit your link to a related category and visitors to that site will find your listing and visit your page.
E-zine Directory
This is a specialized type of directory that can also bring you traffic. If you have a regular newsletter on a topic you can list it in an e-zine directory. Readers looking for you topic will find and subscribe to your newsletter bringing you more traffic.
Ebooks
Ebooks are content pieces designed for easy distribution. Take a subject and write about it, and be sure to include links to your site. Distribute it to your email list, and other ebook listing sites, and be sure to include an e-cover graphic, and rights to give it away. If your ebook is popular you can get a stream of traffic for a long time from just one e-book.
Email Marketing
Email marketing is one of my favorites. By offering incentives, and building up a list of subscribers you can get massive and instant traffic. With a list, traffic is always one short email away. Write, send, and get traffic!
Facebook Ads
Facebook is HUGE. If you didn’t know, they just went public and had to disclose their financials. Last year they made $1 Billion with a capital B in profits. That means they have a billion reasons to keep providing the best advertising possible. With Facebook you get much more control of who you want to reach. You can setup your ad, and quickly get extremely targeted traffic.
Forum Ads
Many forums have either feature sections for selling, or offer banner and text ads. This is a great way to consistently stay in front of a market as forum visitors usually come back frequently and are highly targeted to the specific market the forum covers.
Forum Signature
In addition to advertising, many forums let you create a signature field where you can customize it with your own text, and usually a link. This is a great place to link to your site, and have a free long term ad. However, it’s most effective when you are a regular user and posting quality topics and replies.
Free Stuff Directories
Who doesn’t like free stuff? There are directories online dedicated specifically to tracking down and listing various free offers. Use a lead in to attract your audience, such as an ebook, video, or short report and be sure to include a link back to your site.
Google Adwords
If you haven’t noticed yet, Google runs sponsored listings just about everywhere it can fit them. There network of available traffic is huge, and you can instantly tap into it with an ad. You pay on a per click basis, and can get into virtually any market you choose once your ad is approved.
Guest Posting
This has been very popular lately, but it’s rather simple. Find related blogs or websites and offer to write a content piece for them. Make sure it’s your best work and in return for the post you’ll get a short bio section with a link to your site, or even a good introduction by the site owner. The result is free targeted traffic from a bigger more established site.
Interviews
When you don’t have much to say or experience to offer, find someone that does and interview them. This will give instant credibility to you and your site, as well as attract fans of the interviewer. With a good and relevant interviewee, you’ll get a nice bit of traffic for a long time.
Joint Venture Partners
Like the interviews above, sometimes you have to take the skills you do have, and connect them with others. Make a strong and beneficial offer to a more established partner and you can reap lots of traffic.
Link Exchanges
This is very popular in many markets. A lot of sites will trade links in closely related markets. The result is a sharing of traffic and a net gain for everyone. Basically you place the link of another site onto your page, and they do the same.
Local Bulletin Boards
This is thinking outside the box here, but I know I love looking at bulletin boards in the coffee shop and on campus when I was still in school. Make your posting relevant and stand out, and you’ll find yourself with some new traffic.
Magazine Submissions
Here’s another one many people don’t think about. It’s a little known fact, that magazines are a great source of online traffic. In fact, most people read magazines expecting, and wanting to see ads. There are even some bridal magazines that are just for advertising that readers can’t wait to get their hands on. Look for long running, and closely related ads and you’ve likely got a winning formula.
Mailing Lists
This could be direct mail, or email. Email is better as it’s nearly free. Either way, when you build up a targeted list you can contact them for almost immediate traffic spikes.
Media Buying
Google just jumped into this game, and now it’s easier than ever to do media buying online. This is a more expensive approach to getting traffic but can be MASSIVE if yo do it right. Basically it’s buying ad space across several very large website networks. Think big news outlets, and the most popular websites. You can melt your server down with this kind of traffic so be careful!
Podcasts
Got something to say? Record it and upload through iTunes as a podcast. Many people love to listen to podcasts and get their information fix. Setup a regular production, and you’ll quickly find a new audience and source of traffic.
PPC Networks
Like Adwords, PPC means Pay Per Click. Instead of just one site though, you can list with a network and let many other websites run your ads in exchange for a percent of the click fee.
PPV Networks
This is like the above, but means Pay Per View. Same concept except you pay for how many times your ad is viewed.
Press Release
Is something important happening? If you’ve got a news type item than be sure to send out a press release. It doesn’t have to be groundbreaking news, but also shouldn’t be an ad. Look up others to get an idea, but running these can easily get you a temporary listing at the top of Google and a healthy dose of traffic.
PTC networks
This method is like pay per click but with a twist. PTC (pay to click) sites are not the most reliable, but still a potential traffic source. Instead of the advertiser paying for clicks the site owner pays others to sit and click ads.
RSS Bookmarking
Website content can be compiled into a different form known as an RSS feed. Plenty of people rely on RSS feeds to get their news updates via email or other means so that they don’t have to visit hundreds of sites. Instead the feed is automatically updated and the user can see right away every time a site has a new post or content. Many sites allow you to add your feed and this is called bookmarking. This is great for traffic as well as generating backlinks.
SEO
This means search engine optimization. For many it’s the holy grail to reach a coveted top spot in Google. However, even moderate attention to your website’s optimization can turn in lots of traffic across numerous keywords.
Social Sharing
This is a relative newcomer to the scene, but now with countless social sites around the web you can encourage visitors to “share” the content on their preferred network. What was originally one visitor can quickly turn into hundreds more seeing your content on a social site, like Facebook for example. The viral nature is the best benefit, and a hot content topic can really spread fast.
Software Distribution
Software is the backbone of computers. If you can create a useful software, no matter how simple, you can list it free across countless networks of sites that provide free downloads of software. With the software you can do many things like require email to register, include links in the help or about menu, and even place ads inside the software. All of the above will bring fresh new traffic your way.
Sponsored Events
Here’s a method I see often. People love a good party and meeting with like minded individuals. Often times you don’t even need to run and setup an event, and instead can simply offer to sponsor it for a fee. Setup t-shirts, banners, and anything you can with your logo and link, and you’re well on the way to new traffic.
Traffic Exchange
This is not one of my favorites, but there are websites where you can list your site, and in exchange for looking at other websites, you’ll get your own viewed. The problem is that most people are watching your site, in order to get theirs viewed so they are much less targeted. However, promoting alternate traffic sources can be popular on there as that’s precisely what members of traffic exchanges are looking to get.
Video Sharing
Videos are becoming much easier to produce as well as watch online. Create a short video that others in your market will find useful, include your link and branding, and you will get some traffic. Also, many softwares are available that let you upload across a wide variety of video sharing networks so you can have a huge reach.
Web 2.0 Sites
Social driven content turned into a phenomenon known as web 2.0. These type of sites let you create content on their network. You can benefit from web 2.0 style sites by setting up many smaller sites across over 50 networks that all link back to your website and act as little sales agents sending traffic to your main website.
Yahoo Answers
Many sites like Yahoo Answers offer a forum for people to voice questions. By offering an answer and a link you can generate traffic, as well as commissions from related affiliate products. Focus on being helpful and not just link bombing though. I have used this method to generate traffic as well as sales, but it can be time consuming to find relevant questions to your market.
